We LOVE books, so much, that it’s almost embarrassing how many books we haul back and forth from the library each week. It’s always exciting to discover new books and new authors. So we were especially excited to learn we were chosen to be review a few children’s books by Carole P. Roman!
For this review, we received Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life, If You Were Me and Lived In… Italy, If You Were Me and Lived In… Portugal and Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag.
The illustrations are colorful and fun to look at. This book really spoke to my boys, because the main characters “play imagination just like we do!”
Monkey’s review: I really liked this book. The kids used their imagination and went on a pirate adventure. I think other kids will like this book if they like pirates or if they like playing imagination games. I can’t wait to read more books about Captain No Beard!
The Captain No Beard series is recommended for ages 3-8. They are meant for adults and children to read together.
In If You Were Me and Lived In… Italy, the reader is introduced to two children who live in Italy. Throughout the short story, they teach you about their home, including geographical and historical information about their country, popular names and Italian words/phrases.
Monkey enjoyed learning about popular Italian foods and what families in Italy do for fun. Booger enjoyed learning the Italian words, even though he is only 3 he seems to have an appreciation for languages. He’s always asking me how to say different words in Spanish and is now asking for words in Italian too!
Monkey is really interested in volcanoes right now, so he was amazed to learn that families living in Portugal often go on vacation to the Azores, a chain of 9 volcanic islands. The boys thought that Carnevale sounds like a fun celebration that they would like to go to some day.
This series is a quick and easy read, that also provides a lot of basic information about the various countries. The recommended ages for this series are 4-8 years old and I think that is pretty accurate. There are a lot of words on each page, and while they are written “simply,” they are meant for an adult to read to a child. Monkey and Booger enjoyed the books we received and this is definitely a series we would revisit as we learn more about world cultures. It was great to see them get excited about different countries and discover new places to visit.
