For this review, we used One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook. This 50 page workbook is made of sturdy paper that holds up well to erasing and uses colored boxes and dividing lines to provide a visual reminder of how the numbers should line up.
How We Used Channie’s Visual Handwriting & Math Workbooks
Monkey was initially excited to use this workbook, because he’d never done double digit math before. After a quick explanation of how to do it, I let him loose. After about 5 minutes, I checked on him and found he had written half an answer… I quizzed him orally and he was able to solve the problems, but just didn’t want to write them. So we changed it up and decided to “race” to see who could finish their work first. I moved him into the kitchen and asked him to try complete 2 rows in the workbook before I finished loading the dishwasher. And just like that, we’d found the magic key to getting him to actually write his answers in the workbook!
The pages in the workbook get progressively harder, starting with a full page double digit addition problems with no carrying. A few pages in, it switches to subtraction, again with no borrowing. By the end, the pages are a mix of addition and subtraction with some of the problems requiring carrying/borrowing. The difficulty increases seemed to be appropriately paced, the mixed addition/subtraction pages were especially good for keeping Monkey’s attention.
One Page a Day: Double Digit Math Problem Workbook has been a huge help with Monkey’s number writing. Although Monkey would argue that he didn’t like this workbook, I have seen a drastic improvement in his number alignment and sizing. We will continue to use the workbook along with our regular math curriculum to reinforce these skills. After using a bunch of other handwriting workbooks with Monkey, I can definitely see the advantage of using this method. Booger has been showing interest in learning to write, so I will be getting the Quick & Neat Alphabet Pad for him too!
